INITIAL QUESTIONS

Ventilation system FAQ

Ventilation units pay off in a number of ways. While modern building standards mean that building shells are thick, regular air exchange is important both for the health of the occupants and for humidity control, making it crucial to maintaining the structural integrity of your home. This is where ventilation systems come in. Ventilation units with heat recovery help to reduce heating costs and CO2 emissions. The good sound insulation properties of our ventilation units also cancel out outside noise (from cars, trains, aeroplanes). Ventilation units with a fine particulate filter help people with pollen allergies in particular to breathe easily indoors. The extract air filter significantly reduces house dust and the risk of house dust mite allergy. Opening windows to ventilate can leave you vulnerable to burglars if you forget to close them again. A ventilation system works even when the windows are closed.

A ventilation unit is much more recommended than window ventilation. In new and renovated residential buildings, thermal insulation and new windows make the building shell virtually airtight, keeping valuable heat inside. It makes very little sense to lose this heat through an open window. Regular window ventilation also requires a certain amount of discipline, is difficult to regulate (most people ventilate either too much or too little) and is hardly realistic for working people. Another disadvantage is that window ventilation lets dirt, pollen and noise into your home. Ventilation units work without an operator, they ventilate just the right amount, cover your specific needs (humidity, CO2) and save energy. Heat recovery keeps heat in your flat or home to pre-heat incoming fresh air.

Our ventilation systems use heat recuperation to recover heat. A fixed heat exchanger exchanges heat between the extract air and the outdoor air by cross-counterflow. An extract air fan draws the extract air from the room and passes it through the extract air filter and the heat exchanger. It is then discharged to the outside as exhaust air. At the same time, the supply air fan draws in outdoor air, cleans it using an outdoor air filter and then passes it through the heat exchanger as supply air (separate from the extract air) and into the house. In summer, heat recovery works in reverse to recover coolness by delaying the arrival of warm outside air into your home, unlike window ventilation.

Every residential building has unique requirements. The equipment and scope of the ventilation system must therefore be tailored to meet these requirements. As a general rule, we recommend that you consider the following when planning your ventilation system:

  • Is it a renovation or a new build?
  • Are there special sound insulation requirements?
  • Note in detail the design of the exterior wall, ceiling and roof. There may be restrictions!
  • Should your ventilation system be designed by nominal ventilation or for humidity control (design according to DIN 1946-6)?
  • Do you want to ventilate inside bathrooms according to DIN 18017-3?
  • How do you want to control your ventilation units?
  • Do you want humidity and/or CO2 sensors?
  • Where do you want to place your ventilation units?
  • Do you need system solutions for the basement, attic or interior walls?
  • Are there any fireplaces or chimneys to consider?
  • What type of facade finish do you want – traditional or window reveal?

For reasons of (heat) energy saving and CO2 reduction, ventilation units without heat recovery are no longer common. In Germany, they are only used in windowless rooms (DIN 18017-3) or in apartment buildings (apartment ventilation without heat recovery). This means a lower level of comfort compared to ventilation systems with heat recovery (among other things, cold supply air has to be warmed up, which can cause draughts). Such ventilation units are cheaper because unlike units with heat recovery, they do not have a heat exchanger or other additional components. Good ventilation units with heat recovery, such as Meltem comfort ventilation systems, ensure a reliably high level of indoor air comfort. They are also characterised by super-quiet operation, high air filter quality, convenient operation, reliability and a long service life. The result is a reliably high air quality.  Heat recovery also makes an important contribution to conserving resources and protecting the climate by saving considerable amounts of heating energy.
